International Criminal Defence

SERVICE AREA

International Criminal Defence

Our experience of negotiating with foreign law enforcement agencies stands us in good stead when it comes to resolving cross-jurisdictional issues. We have acted for clients across Europe, the US, Russia and the Middle East as well as on military bases, for example in Germany, Northern Ireland, Cyprus and Afghanistan.

We have an expert understanding of the complex issue of cross jurisdictional use of evidence. More prevalent today than ever before, prosecuting authorities seek to use evidence gathered in one jurisdiction, to assist in the prosecution in another jurisdiction. This not only involves the use of mutual legal assistance between nations, but also engages a number of conventions and treaties. Understanding how such evidence should be used and to oppose such use can be key to how you are defended.

We have experience in representing defendants facing extradition. For example, we have successfully defeated attempts to extradite clients to Russia and to the USA. Our success lies in our ability to act quickly and to take the initiative in these proceedings.

Colin Byrne would be regarded as a expert in respect of matters concerning the Greek jurisdiction and has been involved in significant matters within that jurisdiction for the last 10 years, with extensive knowledge of the Greek criminal and civil code.

Colin Byrne is admitted counsel to the International Criminal Court.
